Which way should we go

We have been watching the weather in the atlantic ocean and along the east coast.   There are a lot of nasty storms out there that are causing us concerns heading south. Today the weather and buoy reports were for 8 mph winds.  We made the decicison to head south thinking that the winds were manageable.
We were only going about 25 nm.  We left Liberty Landing  heading south towards New Jersey. but oh no, that was not happening.  After about an hour the wind and waves were increasing and getting very uncomfortable.  Bob decided that he was not going to continue, so we turned around and headed north.

This is a new area of boating for us which is exciting to explore.   Going up the river was so calm, very different than the morning ride. We are now in a marina that we plan to stay a week.  Going to wait out the storms and hopefully the seas will be calmer next week.  We are going to rent a car for a couple of days and explore the area

Little time in the big city.

We set off to meet the 9:30 ferry from Liberty Landing to financial district dock.  The ferry is a 3 min walk from the boat. It was supposed to reach 90 degrees today so we wanted  to get there before it got too hot.

The 911 museum and memorial is what we wanted to see and from the dock where we got off it was only a 20 min walk.  The museum is very somber, as you would expect, but I think it is something everyone should see.  It is our country's history (not a good one) but we should not forget that day and the people that lost their lives. The memorial was beautiful and peaceful. I thought it might be somber like the museum but it wasn't. The 911 volunteers put white roses on the names of the lost on their birthdays. That was very nice to see that they are still celebrated.  We spent about 4 hours going seeing both.

We headed back to the dock to return to Liberty Landing where we went to another dock to buy tickets to Ellis Island.   We boarded that ferry and off we went.  The building  is very impressive. We toured that for about 2 hours and then Bob got tired of all the people swerving in and out so back on the ferry and back to the boat.

We had only 1 day planned to to go to the city and it was a very long day for these 2 boaters. You would need at least a week here but the marina is too expensive for our budget.

We have not yet decided to head north up the Hudson River or south to New Jersey.   With all the storms forming in the Atlantic we might just wait it out .

NYC here we come

Leaving Port Jefferson was no problem,   We dropped the mooring ball and left around 9:00 am  Long Island sound was calm and it made for a very nice day on the water.

Going through the East River was uneventful but it got a little crazy when we came out into the NY harbor. Being a Sunday, there was a lot of ferries, sight seeing boats, lunch cruise boats, PWC's  you get the idea. Lots of boats makes for bumpy water.  Luckily we were not in it for long because our marina was close by.

We are on the New Jersey side with a beautiful view of the New York city skyline of the financial district. There is a ferry dock near the marina and we hope to take it tomorrow to go to the 911 memorial and museum. Bob also wants to go to Ellis Island. His grandfather came through there when he was around 21 yrs old.

Bob has figured out how to post photos now. As I mentioned in my first post he always says he can't fix things, but I know better.

Here we go go go go on an adventure

The title of this post comes from the Cat in the Hat.  It seems appropriate for our first official post (also my granddaughter Catherine loves the cat)

We should be gone from home for about 9 months, That is the longest time we will have been gone from family.  I am anxious about being gone that long, especially since my 1st grandchild will be 2 in October,  We will be driving home for her birthday, and any other time I need a granddaughter fix.

We left the marina around 8:45 am to a beautiful calm day on Narragansett Bay.  We continued around Point Judith and still the waters were calm.  I looked up to see that we had a stowaway on board, a lady bug.   Everyone knows that means good luck.  The weather was so nice today that we skipped the anchorage that Bob had planned and headed to Port Jefferson which was the 2nd night on the itinerary. It was a long 8 hour day but calm water that we could not pass it up.  So thank you lady bug for a great day on the water.

Due to technical difficulties (cant figure how to post photos) you will just have to picture in your mind  Point Judith Lighthouse and a ladybug. As soon as we figure it out ( when I say we I mean Bob) we will post them.

Round Two

My last post was March 31, 2011 and today is August 4, 2016.  We are getting ready to head south again.

There have been a lot of changes in our lives since the last post. All of our children are married, and we have our 1st grandchild.  We sold our business and no longer have our dog Brady.  This trip south should be very different  from our 1st. We hope to anchor out more nights rather than take a slip at a marina.

Bob has been busy doing boat projects this summer. Both the refrigerator and generator did not work when we launched the boat in May. He as looked at more you tube videos, talked to so called professionals and lost a few more hairs on his head. In the end he figured how to fix both projects. He no longer can say I am not a refrigeration guy. I don't know anything about diesel engines. I now expect him to fix everything on the boat from now on.

Our plan is to leave around the beginning of Sept. and make some side trips as we head south to Florida.

I do not plan to post daily as I did on our first trip, but I will try to keep in touch at least once a week, but no promises.

So stay tuned for our next adventure with Bob and Denise
